 risk – TREATMENT – therapy, injections, bracing, surgery;

· Nerve pain is severe pain often associated with sensory changes and may result from diffuse disease or localized nerve compression – TREATMENT – activity modification, splints, therapy, medications, injections, surgery;

· Bone pain can be from osteoporosis with small compression fractures or from traumatic fractures/bruising – TREATMENT – osteoporosis medication/nutritional changes, immobilization of fractures, bone stimulation;

· Determine cause of fatigue - factors may include sleep patterns, other illnesses, deconditioning, depression, overuse, PPS;

· Evaluate new weaknesses – other neurological conditions, disuse atrophy, weight gain or general medical condition, increased PPS symptoms;

· Be aware of respiratory/pulmonary problems;

· Decreased muscle strength from polio may cause restrictive lung disease;

· Polio survivors may have obstructive disease, especially if they smoke or have allergies – TREATMENT – your doctor or a pulmonologist may require tests, new assistive breathing devices;

· Swallowing difficulties need assessment by a speech therapist and possible therapy/treatment.

The important thread throughout this entire listing is to be aware of what is happening to you, seek medical help as needed, get a treatment that works for each specific issue—with treatments varying relative to the situation and individual preferences.  There is help for everyone of us, and knowing what we can do is important for all of us to remember.
