Annual Conference Information

We’re very pleased to have Dr. Selma Calmes at our annual conference on September 30th.  Dr. Calmes is an anesthesiologist at UCLA Medical Center and a polio survivor.  She is an advocate for the appropriate management of polio survivors during surgery, including monitoring pain and breathing.  Recently, Dr. Calmes became a member of the Board of Post Polio Health International in St. Louis, Missouri.

Even if you don’t anticipate any surgery in the near future, her presentation will help you prepare for any type of medical procedure, providing valuable information for you and your health professionals.  We will have an opportunity to write down many questions for discussion in the afternoon.  She is willing to discuss surgery concerns, overall post-polio issues, and how anesthesiologists can manage chronic and orthopedic pain.

In late morning, we will have an open forum for our attendees.  This is an opportunity to hear from you—to share with us your stories, hobbies, activities, recreation, travel, innovative ideas to make life easier, and whatever else you’d like to say.  For those who prefer not to talk to the group, there will be assigned monitors at each table who will take notes for you to share with the group.

Due to the favorable response last year, we will have a roast turkey dinner at noon. To help digest this great dinner, we plan to have some interactive entertainment following our meal.

Additional vendors are planned for this year.  Also, the Silent Auction has been very well supported each year, and we appreciate all of you who contribute items or make bids.  As in the past, you may donate anything new or crafted---many attendees contributed some beautiful homemade articles –everything from note cards to tote bags!

So, please mark your calendar for September 30th and come join us at the Calumet Club in Augusta.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to get together with others who may be experiencing some of the same things you are, and it gives you a chance to share ideas/thoughts/suggestions with others.  Add to that the chance to hear and talk with a world-renowned specialist in post-polio issues, and you’ve got a day packed full of information and entertainment.
